Every human is an artist — Don Miguel Ruiz

Subject Aims

At HBJS we aim to create an art curriculum which delivers an exciting and rich visual arts education, enabling pupils to express themselves through recognising the importance of and engaging in a wide range of creative activities. We aim to enjoy exploring art in a variety of contexts and develop skills using a range of different medium.

A high-quality art curriculum should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to take creative risks and to articulate and learn from the journey, rather than head towards a pre-defined end result. Children will develop an awareness that visual literacy, observational skills and manual dexterity support learning and understanding in a wide range of subject areas and that art is equally important to other areas of the curriculum.

As pupils progress through the key stage, they will use the language of art to comment on the technical, aesthetic and emotive elements within a particular piece. They should learn how to appreciate and value the importance of art and how it both reflects and shapes our history and multicultural society

Subject dream

Art is all around us. Creating transforms, connects and empowers. To create is to think, feel and communicate. If we want a world full of creative thinkers, we need to enable and sustain design, making and creating from a young age. Not all of us will become sculptors, engineers or designers, but we will become more connected, rounded and creative people. Art is inclusive, supporting self-esteem and emotional intelligence.
The act of making is empowering: people of all ages feel better for doing it. Creating and appreciating art can also be very social, personal and give confidence to children, providing an opportunity to succeed.
