School Sports Selection & Participation Policy
At Hunter’s Bar Juniors, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy, challenge, and personal growth that comes from representing their school in physical activity. We align our sports program with the Your School Games framework to ensure we provide a broad range of opportunities—from competition to inclusive festivals.
Our Selection Philosophy
We aim to match the right child to the right event. While we strive to be as inclusive as possible, our selection process changes depending on the intent of the specific tournament or festival.
We categorize our events into four main pillars:
|
Category |
Objective |
Selection Criteria |
|
Compete |
High-level performance and success in the local competition pathway. |
Performance-Based: Selection is based on skill, fitness, effort, and tactical understanding. We aim to field our strongest team to be as competitive as possible. |
|
Develop |
Increasing confidence and skills for specific groups (e.g., girls-only, SEND, or those new to the sport). |
Targeted: Pupils who meet the specific criteria of the event and would benefit most from a focused, supportive environment. |
|
Participate |
Building life skills, character, and school values through sport. |
Engagement-Based: Open to pupils who demonstrate great sportsmanship and a desire to learn, regardless of their current skill level. |
|
For All |
Maximizing activity levels for the entire school community. |
Universal: These are inclusive initiatives (often virtual or whole-school) where every pupil is encouraged to take part. |
Internal Opportunities (Intra-School)
Beyond representing the school externally (Inter-school), we provide a robust Intra-school program including many opportunities to play against friends and more on the M.U.G.A at lunchtime. This is facilitated by Mr Hewson and Mr Owen with pupils often taking the lead of selecting teams and competitions. There are also often inter-class matches or tournaments that are done through structured play during PE curriculum time as well as Gem Family competitions.
Expectations of Our Representatives
Regardless of the competition category, any pupil representing Hunter’s Bar Juniors is expected to uphold our core values:
Note to Parents: We celebrate all levels of achievement. While not every child will be selected for a "Compete" team, we are committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to represent the school in a "Develop," "Participate," or "For All" capacity during their time with us.
How We Communicate
Information regarding upcoming fixtures and selection will be shared via the Peak Edge App (as well as an Email/paper letter in some scenarios). We encourage parents to support all children in their journey, whether they are playing for a trophy or playing for fun.
